BIO
Mary Cutrufello graduated Yale University in 1991, after studying Transportation History of the 20th Century. Mary released her Mercury Records debut, "When The Night Is Through," in 1998 to rave reviews. USA Today called it "a sound that falls somewhere between early Bob Seeger and Exile on Main Street-era Rolling Stones," and said "Cutrufello is a fierce guitarist with a blistered-throat voice".
Mary Cutrufello was born in Connecticut and adopted by two educators. She certainly would have been headed for an academic career of some sort were it not for the day she fell in love with the radio and begged for a guitar. Having earned her spending money at Yale with the Cement Shoes Blues Band, she packed her guitar and her pick-up and headed for Houston where she began her graduate studies in Honky Tonks.
Mary left Connecticut with her Telecaster and Ford pick-up for Houston where she began her graduate studies in late nights and scorching guitars. Now, six years later, Cutrufello delivers WHEN THE NIGHT IS THROUGH, her Mercury debut. On the album, her core band is Kenny Aronoff (John Mellencamp, John Fogerty), Bob Glaub (John Fogerty, Mary Chapin Carpenter) and Wallflower Rami Jaffee, with additional support from Jim Keltner (John Lennon, Elvis Costello), Benmont Tench (Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers), Greg Leisz (k.d. lang), Was (not Was)'s Sweetpea Atkinson, as well as her own bandmates Roland Denny and Dana Myzer. The songs rock and shine like classic Mellencamp, and introduce Mary Cutrufello as one of today's finest guitarists.
Mary Cutrufello describes her album as..."full of the promise and hope and strength of rock and roll." It is difficult to categorize her music. The Washington Post called her a "category killer" while USA Today proclaimed, "the performance is all rock & roll." Cutrufello says, "it's not my skin color, my sex or my education that matters. I am what I am; it's what I do that's important. That's why I hate definitions-because they're just words that mean different things to different people. Say the word 'jazz' and see what I mean: some think Coltrane, others Kenny G."
Mary was featured in a television and print campaign for Converse Sneakers.
